Who we are
HAUL is an app for people who buy and resell second-hand things, made in the Netherlands. In this policy “HAUL”, “we” and “us” mean the people who make it. For anything about your data, write to hello@gethaul.me.
What stays on your phone
Your finds, your research results, your haul (what you bought, listed and sold, and for how much), your rules, watches and places are stored only on your device. We cannot see this information, and nobody else can through us.
You can erase all of it at any time in You → Settings → Erase everything. Deleting the app deletes it too.
What leaves your phone, and to whom
Some answers need a service outside your phone. HAUL sends each one only what that answer needs, only when you use the feature:
| When you… | What is sent, and where |
|---|---|
| Show HAUL an item | The photo you take, to Google (the Gemini API), which tells HAUL what the item is. |
| Research an item | The product, its condition, the price you were asked, your country and currency, through HAUL's server to Anthropic (Claude), which works out the answer. The web searches it needs go to our search provider, Brave Search, and HAUL's server opens the public pages it finds — completed sales and asking prices. |
| Ask HAUL a question | Your question and the research it is about, through HAUL's server to Anthropic (Claude). |
| Use nearby listings, places or runs | Only if you allow location: your position to Apple Maps (to name your town, and for places, travel times and routes) — and only when Apple can't name your town, to OpenStreetMap; your search terms and area to Marktplaats and 2dehands, to read the listings near you. |
| Scan a barcode | The barcode number, to Open Library and UPCitemdb, to look up the product. |
| Paste a listing link | HAUL opens that page to read the listing, as your browser would. |
| Ask to be reminded on gethaul.me | Your email address, the date and the country your request came from (as Cloudflare sees it), stored by HAUL on Cloudflare. To stop automated sign-ups, a scrambled form of your network address is also kept for one hour. Your address is used for one thing only: one email when HAUL is released. After that email it is deleted. To have it deleted sooner, write to hello@gethaul.me. |
| Subscribe | Payment is handled entirely by Apple. HAUL never sees your card or bank details; it only learns whether your subscription is active. |
HAUL's server exists only to pass research and questions on to Anthropic and to count how much of your plan you have used. It keeps an anonymous ID for your subscription and that count — not your photos, your research results or your haul. Anthropic does not use what HAUL sends it to train its models.
Each of these services handles what it receives under its own privacy policy. We choose services that do not need your name or email to answer, and we never send them your haul, your history or your rules.
What we never do
- No ads, and no advertising or tracking code in the app.
- No selling or sharing your data with anyone for marketing.
- No tracking you across other apps or websites.
- No analytics on what you buy, sell or research.
Permissions
Camera — to show HAUL an item. Photos — to pick a photo you already took. Location — for what is near you; HAUL works without it. Each permission is asked for only when you first use the feature, and can be changed at any time in iOS Settings.
This website
gethaul.me is served by Cloudflare, which keeps standard technical logs (such as IP addresses) to deliver and protect the site. The site sets no cookies, has no analytics and loads nothing from other companies — even its fonts are served from gethaul.me. If you ask to be reminded, your browser keeps a small note (not a cookie, never sent anywhere) so the page can show you're already on the list. Email to our addresses is forwarded by Cloudflare to our inbox.
How long things are kept
On your phone: until you delete them. With the services above: as their own policies describe. Email you send us: as long as needed to help you, then deleted.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you can ask what data we hold about you, have it corrected or deleted, object to its use, and take it with you. Because HAUL keeps your data on your device, most of this you can do yourself in the app; for anything else, write to hello@gethaul.me and we will answer within a month. You can also complain to the Dutch data protection authority, the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens.
Children
HAUL is not meant for children under 16, and we do not knowingly receive information from them.
Changes
When HAUL starts using a different service, or this policy changes in any way that matters, we update this page and its date — and for important changes, we tell you in the app.
